PERALTA — It’s a different USDA.
That was the message Monday morning from U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack as he toured a small farm in Peralta with Democrats U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich and U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez. The three, along with a cadre of representatives from agriculture-focused non profits, local small growers and other government agencies, visited BlueFly Farms.
U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez of New Mexico’s District 2 came to Las Cruces Wednesday, April 5, along with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and U.S. Rep. Nanette Barragan of California.
The three met at New Mexico State University’s Corbett Center auditorium, along with NMSU Chancellor Dan Arvizu and four NMSU engineering students to discuss issues of transportation, infrastructure and workforce in New Mexico and the United States.
“I literally wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for this university,” Buttigieg said.
Pete Buttigieg is the 19th person to serve as the U.S. Secretary of Transportation since the post was created in 1966. On Wednesday, he became the first to visit Deming.
On a city-owned field flanked by farmland with the Florida Mountains as a backdrop, Buttigieg devoted his appearance to highlighting Biden Administration investments in rural America and New Mexico in particular.
