Vasquez Stands Up for Migrant Rights During Visit to Detention Facility
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last week, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (N.M.-02) visited the Cibola County Correctional Center to address concerns regarding the treatment of migrants and to advocate for humane conditions.
“Privately-run immigration centers have a history of abuse and neglect that must be addressed,” said Vasquez. “Federally funded migrant detention centers should not be exempt from oversight. That’s why I’m proud that my bill, the Humane Accountability Act, will hold private detention center operators accountable and ensure migrants are treated with respect, humanity and according to the values we hold dear as Americans.”
Vasquez’s visit to the detention facility aimed to address recent complaints filed by the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center regarding inhumane treatment and unfit living conditions at the Cibola County Correctional Center.
During his visit, Vasquez spoke directly with several inmates, hearing firsthand accounts, highlighting the urgent need for humane treatment and fair conditions in detention facilities nationwide.
In October, Vasquez introduced a package of bipartisan immigration bills aimed at solving the border and humanitarian crisis one step at a time. The package includes the Humane Accountability Act that provides oversight, accountability and the data to ensure families and children legally seeking asylum are treated with dignity, humanity and respect.
