Fights over diversity training, COVID-19 and LGBTQ+ troops dominated the House Armed Services Committee's yearly markup of its annual defense policy bill as lawmakers debated on into the night Wednesday.

But Republicans and Democrats on the panel ultimately agreed to several bipartisan measures that improve bread-and-butter issues for service members. The bill includes new bonuses for junior troops and one of the highest military pay raises in recent history.

U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez, D-N.M., and U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani, R-Arizona, announced in a June 15 news conference in Washington, D.C. that they have created the Bipartisan Southwest Coalition.

Through the coalition, Vasquez said the two representatives will work together “on Issues that are important to the Southwest,” including border security, economic opportunity and the protection of public lands.

The two have “different political ideologies,” Vasquez said, but can work together to “represent the country that we love so much.”

(The Center Square) - The Federal Aviation Administration is providing six grants worth $10.9 million to fix infrastructure at six airports in New Mexico.

The New Mexico congressional delegation welcomed the news, praising the FAA's decision.

U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján, D-New Mexico, said the state's airports play a vital role in its economy.

Once a pro forma vote allowing the government to borrow money as needed to pay for enacted legislation, this year, after contentious negotiations and concessions from the White House, lawmakers pushed to get a bill to President Biden, who signed it with just two days before the nation faced its first-ever default.
