Vasquez Statement on the Administration’s Executive Order on Immigration and Border Security
While this is a step forward, Congress must present meaningful solutions for comprehensive immigration reform
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, June 4, 2024, U.S.Representative Gabe Vasquez (N.M.-02) released the following statement on the Administration’s Executive Order related to immigration and border security:
“This order takes an initial step to fix our longstanding broken immigration system and the challenges we face at our border. But the order does not address the totality of the problems our immigration system faces, and now more than ever, we need Congressional action to tackle this humanitarian crisis. Republicans, who control the agenda in the House, must muster the courage to bring common-sense, bipartisan bills, like mine to the floor.”
“The fact is, Republican inaction in Congress is hurting our border communities. That’s why I introduced a package of common-sense border security and immigration reform bills that move the ball forward and provide tangible solutions to the asylum crisis, provides legal pathways to residency and addresses fentanyl smuggling and human trafficking. It’s time to think bigger, rise above partisanship and work together to legalize Dreamers and get serious about matching our workforce needs with comprehensive immigration reform.”
Background:
Vasquez has led bipartisan, common-sense solutions in Congress, including a package of bills to reform our immigration process and to address the challenges we face at the border:
- The bipartisan No More Narcos Act, which protects students from the dangerous influence of cartels.
- The bipartisan Stop COYOTES Act, which stiffens penalties for human traffickers.
- The Smart Border Protection Act, which invests in additional Customs Officers, infrastructure, and inspection technology at ports of entry to stop the flow of fentanyl.
- The Strengthening Our Workforce Act, which provides a pathway to citizenship for critical workers.
- The Humane Accountability Act, which improves oversight of migrant detention facilities to ensure detained individuals have access to legal resources and are being treated with dignity.
- The bipartisan Joint Task Force to Combat Opioid Trafficking Act, which stands up a Joint Task Force focused on preventing the flow of illegal drugs, such as fentanyl, from entering the U.S.
- Called on Congress to address our broken immigration system and provide emergency federal funding to support border communities.
- Led the effort to secure funding to stop fentanyl smuggling by installing new technology at our ports of entry.
