Vasquez Appointed to Two Key House Armed Services Subcommittees
Washington, D.C. – This week, the House Armed Services Committee announced U.S.Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) will serve on the Readiness and Strategic Forces Subcommittees, where he will create and impact policy related to New Mexico’s vast national security assets.
“Serving on these subcommittees gives me the opportunity to bring home results and investments for our service members, military families, and the communities that depend on well-funded military installations and research facilities,” said Vasquez. “New Mexico is a critical component of our national security and I am proud to be representing our state and national interests on these subcommittees.”
As a member of the Readiness Subcommittee, Vasquez is committed to ensuring that New Mexico’s bases are upgraded, modernized, and support renewable energy generation. Vasquez will work to address climate change and bolster our national security and military preparedness by supporting sustainable operations at home and abroad. He will also work to ensure the training operations and missions at New Mexico’s key facilities are fully supported with the best technology and facilities available.
As a member of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Vasquez will have direct oversight and input on key research, development, and state-of-the-art testing taking place in New Mexico. Vasquez’s position on this subcommittee will allow him to ensure that New Mexico continues to be a leader in designing and preparing the country’s cutting-edge weapons research and nuclear programs.

Background
The Subcommittee on Readiness has jurisdiction over Department of Defense policy and programs and accounts related to military readiness, training, logistics and maintenance, military construction, organic industrial base, the civilian and contract workforce, environment, military installations and real property management, family housing, base realignments and closures, and energy.
The Subcommittee on Strategic Forces has jurisdiction over Department of Defense and Department of Energy policy related to strategic deterrence, strategic stability, nuclear weapons, strategic and nuclear arms control, nonproliferation, nuclear safety, missile defense, and space; Department of Defense programs and accounts related to nuclear weapons, strategic missiles, nuclear command and control systems, Department of Defense intelligence space, space systems and services of the military departments, and intermediate and long-range missile defense systems; and Department of Energy national security programs and accounts.
