EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A local leader in the borderland and three undocumented workers headed to Washington D.C. Thursday morning to introduce a series of bills to address the ongoing migrant surge across the U.S. - Mexico border.

Congressman Gabe Vasquez(D-N.M.), along with energy worker Jose Felix Alexis Rodriguez, home healthcare aide Maria de Jesus "Marichuy" Gallardo and a former truck driver and now leader of NM Cafe Jesus Cano Gutierrez, presented the congressman's "Common-Sense" Immigration and Border Bills.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A New Mexico congressman is challenging Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s decision to put up a border fence between our two states. The fence borders Rep. Gabe Vasquez’s district.

“The governor’s actions are insulting to New Mexicans. Putting up concertina wire between two states in the United States is first unconstitutional, and it’s, second, disrespectful to the community here at Sunland Park,” said Rep. Gabe Vasquez.

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (KFOX14) — Governor Greg Abbott has put up additional concertina wire along the southern border.

Abbott's actions have raised questions on the legality of having the wire expanded into New Mexico.

KFOX14 spoke with New Mexico Democratic Congressman Gabe Vasquez who expressed his disapproval of the expansion.

"This is really an insult to the community that we all share here collectively, but more importantly the governor's actions are unconstitutional," Vasquez said.

“Twenty-one deceased migrants that we cover in our jurisdiction. We are continuing to see that but with injuries and people lost in the desert,” Eric Lopez, the Sunland Park Police Department chief, said.

U.S. House of Rep. Gabe Vasquez, a Democrat representing the second congressional district, joined the two other New Mexico Democrats in the House to vote against the Department of Defense Appropriations Act and the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act.

Vasquez cited verbal attacks against LGTBQ+ service members and their families and access to reproductive health care as the reason he voted against both bills in a news release explaining his vote.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The federal government is expected to avoid a shutdown – at least for now. The Senate approved a temporary solution after the House voted “yes” on the bill earlier Saturday.

Millions of Americans can breathe a sigh of relief as soon as President Biden signs the bill that he’s expected to.

A shutdown would hurt federal workers everywhere, including in New Mexico.

New Mexico’s congressional delegation agreed it was frustrating and scary week not knowing what was going to happen.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) and U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez (D-N.M.) have announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded $9,256,350 in funding from the Infrastructure Law for New Mexico-based Sacred Wind Communications to expand reliable, affordable, high-speed internet for residents in Sierra and Doña Ana counties.

The funding will be delivered through USDA’s Rural Development Reconnect Loan and Grant Program.
