Vasquez Votes to Cut Red Tape and Lower Housing Costs for New Mexicans
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On January 9, 2025, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) voted in favor of H.R. 5184, the Affordable HOMES Act, to lower manufactured home costs and pass on savings to New Mexican consumers.
Manufactured housing plays a critical role in New Mexico, where one out of every six homes is a mobile home. Working families, seniors, and those living in rural New Mexican communities disproportionately rely on mobile and manufactured homes as a reliable source of affordable housing, but their homes are coming under threat as greedy corporate landlords increasingly engage in predatory price gouging.
By repealing the Department of Energy’s 2022 regulations and restoring exclusive authority to regulate energy standards for manufactured housing to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Affordable HOMES Act cuts red tape — providing clarity for builders and streamlining standards to maximize cost-effectiveness — to ensure that working families are not priced out of home ownership.
“We should be making it easier, not harder, for working families to buy homes, and manufactured homes are a huge piece of the puzzle in New Mexico,” said Vasquez. “I support this bill to cut red tape and stop costs from being passed on to consumers, and I will always work to keep mobile homes within reach for those who rely on them most. We can move toward energy efficiency without pricing working families out of the roofs over their heads.”
Vasquez remains committed to protecting access to safe, affordable, permanent housing for all New Mexicans, including those living in mobile homes. He recently introduced the Keep Mobile Homes Affordable Act to crack down on predatory price gouging by greedy corporate landlords and protect long-time residents from being displaced from their communities.
