Vasquez Statement on Failed Vote for Speaker of the House
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, October 17, 2023, U.S.Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) released the following statement on the failed vote to elect Rep. Jim Jordan to Speaker of the House.
“House Republicans are in disarray and continue to spiral into complete chaos, right in front of the American people. The far-right wing of the House GOP caused this dysfunction, and now they can’t get enough votes to elect one of their own. Under former Speaker McCarthy’s leadership, they failed to bring common-sense, bipartisan legislation to the floor, bringing Congress within hours of a government shutdown. Instead, House Democrats bailed out Republicans to keep the government open.
“Jim Jordan, their latest choice, an election denier who has voted to ban reproductive rights without exceptions and slashed Social Security and Medicare. Jordan has not passed a single bill in the last 16 years in Congress. Put simply, he is unfit to lead.
“We cannot address our nation’s most pressing issues without a Speaker, and it’s imperative that we reopen the people’s House.”
