Rep. Vasquez Supports Funding to Protect Women & Kids, Warns Political Climate is Driving Abuse into the Shadows

February 9, 2026

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – On February 6, 2026, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) visited La Piñon Sexual Assault Recovery Services in Las Cruces, where he met with the Executive Director, program directors, and other staff. During the visit, La Piñon staff reported that the Administration’s actions and current political climate have eroded community trust, causing a 50% drop in local residents seeking their services — particularly in southern Doña Ana County.

Vasquez recently supported billions in Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and Victims of Crimes Act (VOCA) funding to bolster La Piñon’s work to keep southern New Mexicans safe and healthy, including:

  • Nearly $2 billion to support Victims of Crimes Act (VOCA) funding, which La Piñon uses to support students at NMSU, provide casework services, and offer 24/7 Victim Services support to southern New Mexicans.
  • $720 million for Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) grants, which La Piñon uses to pay for transportation for local residents who need their services, as well as a nurse position.

“Domestic violence, sexual abuse, and child exploitation are grave offenses that should be reported and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. But because this Administration is eroding community trust within Hispanic communities, southern New Mexicans are scared to report sexual assault and abuse, pushing survivors into the shadows while abusers walk free,” said Rep. Vasquez. “As a community, we must be invested in protecting everyone equally under the rule of law. ICE’s campaign of fear and terror is unacceptable, and it’s why I am demanding reform and accountability at DHS immediately, starting with Secretary Noem’s resignation.”

Since its founding in 1992, La Piñon has offered free, comprehensive services to survivors, including 24/7 crisis response, advocacy, counseling, SANE services, children’s advocacy, and prevention education. Through strong community partnerships, La Piñon helps ensure survivors receive compassionate, coordinated care that supports healing and safety.
