Rep. Vasquez Fights for Farmers Amidst Tariffs and Cuts to Food Assistance with Farm and Family Relief Act

January 15, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On January 15, 2026, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) unveiled the framework of the Farm and Family Relief Act alongside House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Angie Craig and other Democratic members of the Committee at a press conference on Capitol Hill.

“New Mexico farmers are tough, but the President's tariffs and cuts to food assistance have hit them hard,” said Rep. Vasquez. “The Farm & Family Relief Act will deliver real support, helping our chile, onion, and other specialty crop growers get up to $900K to stay on the land they love for generations to come.”

The Administration’s reckless tariff policies and Republican cuts to food assistance have strained farmers, driven up grocery prices, increased uncertainty in rural and border communities, and put food assistance at risk for millions of children, seniors, and veterans. The Farm and Family Relief Act addresses these harms by granting states more time to respond to federal SNAP cuts, requiring Congressional approval on tariffs, and bolstering farmer aid for specialty growers.
