Rep. Gabe Vasquez Statement on House Republicans’ Budget
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) issued the following statement in response to the House Republican budget proposal, which threatens the health care, food security, and financial well-being of hardworking families in New Mexico.
“The House Republican budget is a direct attack on the people of New Mexico. Their plan rips away critical health care, makes it harder for families to put food on the table, and prioritizes billionaire tax cuts over everyday Americans.
“While New Mexicans struggle with rising costs, Republicans in Congress are pushing a budget that would make things even worse—raising health care costs, cutting food assistance, and gutting essential programs that families depend on. All while handing out $4.5 trillion in tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy and big corporations.
“New Mexicans deserve a budget that invests in them—not one that sells them out to billionaires.
“I will vote against this Republican rip-off and stand up for the people who sent me to Washington to defend their livelihoods. I urge my colleagues to put people over politics and reject this budget that sells out hardworking Americans.”
Background on the Local Impact of the Republican Budget in NM-02:
- Health Care Costs Soar: Under this plan, 20,000 New Mexicans who rely on the Affordable Care Act would see their health care premiums increase by an average of $930 a year.
- A 60-year-old couple in NM-02 could see their health insurance costs increase by $16,278 annually, making coverage unaffordable for many.
- Medicaid at Risk: Nearly 290,000 people in NM-02—children, seniors, and hardworking families—could lose their Medicaid coverage. This includes 132,000 children under 19 and 26,000 seniors over 65, who depend on these essential benefits for their health and well-being.
- Food Assistance Cuts: 177,000 New Mexicans in NM-02 who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to put food on the table are at risk under the Republican budget.
