Rep. Gabe Vasquez Statement on Arizona Supreme Court Banning Reproductive Choice
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, U.S. RepresentativeGabe Vasquez (N.M.-02) released the following statement on the Arizona Supreme Court ruling to uphold the state’s 1864 total abortion ban:
“The recent decision of the Arizona Supreme Court to uphold a total abortion ban, including in cases of rape and incest is completely appalling. This law was initially written when women could not even vote or own property and is older than the state of New Mexico. It has no place in our modern society.
“Denying women access to safe and legal reproductive health care forces them into dangerous situations, risking their health and well-being. It is unacceptable that in the 21st century, we are witnessing such regressive policies. This decision not only disregards the reproductive rights of women but also undermines their dignity and autonomy.
“While New Mexico remains a safe haven for reproductive rights, I will continue to fight in Congress for the rights of women to make decisions about their own bodies.”
