Rep. Gabe Vasquez Champions Veterans’ Education and Early Childhood Programs in Las Cruces

September 6, 2024

Vasquez announced his new education bill for veterans and a $4.5 million grant for Head Start for Las Cruces Public Schools

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – On Friday, September 6, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (N.M.-02) discussed his newly introduced Veteran Education Assistance Adjustment Act to provide more educational resources to veterans and announced he secured $4.5 million in Head Start investments for Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS).

Vasquez met with student veterans at New Mexico State University (NMSU) to discuss his newly introduced bill, the Veteran Education Assistance Adjustment Act. This bill would increase the books and supplies stipend for veterans pursuing higher education, helping them access the resources they need for academic success.

“Our veterans have sacrificed for our country, and they deserve every opportunity to succeed in their education and career goals,” said Vasquez. “Sitting down with veterans today at NMSU was a great opportunity to hear firsthand about their needs and goals as they transition to civilian life. My Veteran Education Assistance Adjustment Act will make a meaningful difference by ensuring veterans have the necessary tools to thrive in the classroom.”

“Many veterans most often pay out of pocket to cover books and supplies, which increases their burden to complete the educational goals. This bill helps better support our student veterans with the ever-increasing costs of higher education,” said Hector Sanchez, Director of NMSU Military and Veterans Programs.

At the meeting, Vasquez, veterans and NMSU leaders also discussed access to online courses and red tape veterans face when going back to school. NMSU alumni who have served often move on to become business owners, creating new jobs and supporting their local community. Vasquez is committed to supporting service members and their families, both during and after their service.

Vasquez also visited and met with LCPS Superintendent Ignacio Ruizto announce a $4.5 million grant for Head Start projects, which will provide critical funding for early childhood education programs. During his visit, he met with teachers and LCPS officials, emphasizing the importance of early education in shaping New Mexico’s next generation.

“Investing in early childhood education is one of the best things we can do for our children’s and our state’s future. This $4.5 million grant for Head Start will help ensure that students in our Las Cruces have access to the resources needed to get a strong start in life,” Vasquez said.“In my conversation with Superintendent Ruiz, we talked about the pressing need to expand early childhood services, particularly in underserved areas. This grant is a critical step in leveling the playing field and giving every child the chance to succeed, right from the beginning.”

Vasquez’s visits to NMSU and LCPS underscore his commitment to supporting students of all ages—from veterans transitioning into civilian careers to the youngest members of the community starting their educational journeys.
