ICYMI: Rep. Gabe Vasquez Discusses Immigration in CNN Interview
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On January 24, 2024, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) joined CNN News Central calling out the administration’s controversial approach to deportation and shared his concerns about the potential economic and constitutional impacts of policies promoted by President Donald Trump.
“Folks in my district, especially in the Hispanic community, have the confidence that I’m going to focus on the solutions here in Congress, which I did during my first term, including a package of bipartisan immigration and border security bills that target the cartels, target the human smugglers, target the coyotes, at the same time also helping to improve and support international trade at our ports of entry and creating jobs along the border,” said Vasquez during the interview.

When asked about President Trump’s legal challenges on removing birthright citizenship, Vasquez emphasized that the President lacks the authority to “rewrite the Constitution” or “eliminate an amendment with the stroke of a pen.” He expressed confidence that the courts will block these policies, which he described as not only poor policy but also “bad politics” that contradict the sacred values of the Constitution.
Vasquez also discussed his focus on universal issues such as rising costs and access to affordable health care and child care. His commitment to addressing these concerns and working across the aisle helped him earn the trust of his constituents.
